Demonstrating the Application of Safeguarding Principles Within Counsellor Training.

LC&CTA recognises that safeguarding within counsellor training extends beyond responding to immediate risks. It includes ensuring that students develop the professional competence, ethical awareness, reflective capacity and personal responsibility required to work safely with clients.

Safeguarding is therefore embedded throughout the student journey, from recruitment and induction through to placement, supervision, assessment and progression.

Identifying and Responding to Concerns

LC&CTA maintains an approach where concerns relating to client safety, professional boundaries, ethical practice, student conduct or fitness to practise are identified, discussed and appropriately managed.

Concerns may arise through a number of routes, including:

• Tutor observations;
• Student discussions;
• Assignment work;
• Placement feedback;
• Supervision records;
• Client and supervision logs;
• Reflective practice;
• Concerns raised by students, supervisors or external partners.

All concerns are considered carefully and proportionately, with appropriate evidence reviewed before decisions are made.

Evidence-Based Decision Making

LC&CTA recognises the importance of ensuring that safeguarding decisions are fair, transparent and based on evidence.

• Where concerns arise, consideration is given to:
• The nature and seriousness of the concern;
• The potential impact on clients or others;
• The student’s ability to reflect and engage with feedback;
• Relevant supervision and placement information;
• The student’s progress and professional development.

Decisions relating to progression, additional support or professional suitability are documented to ensure accountability and consistency.

Safeguarding Through Supervision and Monitoring

Supervision is recognised as a key safeguarding mechanism within counsellor training.

Students are expected to use supervision appropriately, discuss client work honestly, explore ethical dilemmas and seek guidance when uncertain.

LC&CTA has strengthened monitoring processes to support early identification of concerns, including:

• Clearer guidance regarding completion of client and supervision logs;
• Regular review of client and supervision records;
• Increased focus on ethical reflection and professional judgement;
• Continued communication between tutors, supervisors and placement providers where appropriate.

These measures support students to develop safe and reflective practice habits throughout training.

Supporting Students While Maintaining Professional Standards

LC&CTA recognises that safeguarding requires a balance between supporting students and maintaining the standards required of professional counsellors.

Where concerns arise, the organisation seeks to provide opportunities for reflection, learning and development wherever appropriate.

However, counselling training also carries a responsibility to ensure that students progressing into professional practice demonstrate the required competence, ethical awareness, boundaries and judgement necessary to protect clients.

Safeguarding decisions are therefore made with consideration of both the individual student’s circumstances and the wider responsibility owed to clients and the counselling profession.

Fitness to Practise and Professional Suitability

LC&CTA recognises that academic achievement alone does not determine readiness to practise as a counsellor.

Students must demonstrate:

• Ethical awareness;
• Reflective ability;
• Appropriate use of supervision;
• Professional boundaries;
• Accountability for their actions;
• Ability to recognise and respond to client needs safely.

Where concerns raise questions regarding professional suitability, these are managed through appropriate procedures, including additional monitoring, support plans, conduct processes or fitness-to-practise review where necessary.

Learning and Continuous Improvement

LC&CTA views safeguarding as an ongoing process of reflection and improvement.

During the 2025/26 academic year, the tutor team undertook significant reflection following a number of complex professional and ethical matters. This resulted in a review of existing processes and the introduction of further quality assurance measures.

These developments included:

• Strengthening the monitoring of client and supervision records;
• Introducing additional review points relating to student aptitude and professional suitability;
• Enhancing guidance regarding ethical responsibilities and record keeping;
• Reviewing documentation, policies and procedures.
• The tutor team recognises that effective safeguarding requires organisations to learn from experience and continually strengthen their practice.

Through these processes, LC&CTA demonstrates its commitment to ensuring that safeguarding remains central to the delivery of counsellor training.
