1. Policy Statement and Commitment

LC&CTA recognises supervision as a fundamental component of safe and ethical counselling practice and an essential element of counsellor training.

Supervision provides students with a structured opportunity to reflect on their counselling practice, explore ethical considerations, develop professional awareness and ensure that client welfare remains central to their work.

LC&CTA considers effective supervision to be a key safeguarding mechanism and recognises its responsibility to ensure that students understand the purpose, value and expectations of supervision throughout their training.

2. Purpose of this Policy

The purpose of this policy is to outline how LC&CTA ensures that:

• Students understand the role and purpose of supervision;
• Students engage appropriately with supervision;
• Supervision supports safe and ethical client work;
• Concerns identified through supervision are appropriately considered;
• Supervision contributes to student development and professional suitability.

3. The Purpose of Supervision

Supervision within counsellor training serves several important functions:

• Client Protection
• Supervision provides a mechanism for identifying and addressing concerns relating to client welfare, risk, ethical dilemmas and safe practice.
• Professional Development
• Supervision supports students to develop counselling skills, self-awareness, confidence and professional identity.
• Ethical Reflection

Supervision enables students to consider issues such as:

• Boundaries;
• Confidentiality;
• Diversity and difference;
• Power dynamics;
• Personal responses within the counselling relationship.

Accountability

Supervision supports students to take responsibility for their practice and recognise the limits of their competence.

4. Student Responsibilities Within Supervision

Students are expected to:

• Attend supervision regularly;
• Prepare appropriately for supervision sessions;
• Bring relevant client work for discussion;
• Reflect honestly on their practice;
• Discuss concerns, uncertainties and ethical dilemmas;
• Act upon supervisory guidance;
• Recognise when additional support or advice is required.

Students must understand that effective supervision requires openness, honesty and willingness to reflect.

5. Supervisor Responsibilities

Supervisors supporting LC&CTA students are expected to:

• Provide appropriate guidance and challenge;
• Support safe and ethical practice;
• Encourage reflective thinking;
• Support development of counselling competence;
• Identify and raise concerns where necessary;
• Maintain appropriate professional boundaries.

Supervisors should support student development whilst maintaining their responsibility to consider client welfare.

6. Supervision Requirements

Students undertaking placement practice are expected to engage in appropriate supervision arrangements.

LC&CTA provides guidance regarding:

• The importance of regular supervision;
• Expectations regarding preparation;
• Appropriate use of supervision;
• Recording of supervision activity.

Supervision requirements are monitored as part of the wider placement and quality assurance processes.

7. Use of Client and Supervision Logs

Client and supervision logs provide important evidence of student engagement with professional practice.

Students are expected to maintain accurate records that demonstrate:

• Client work undertaken;
• Supervision received;
• Reflective learning;
• Ongoing development.

LC&CTA reviews documentation to support accountability, identify learning needs and ensure students are practising safely.

8. Supervision and Safeguarding

LC&CTA recognises supervision as a critical safeguarding process.

Students are expected to bring safeguarding concerns, ethical dilemmas and uncertainties to supervision.

Where concerns are identified, appropriate action will be considered in accordance with relevant procedures, including:

• Safeguarding Policy;
• Fitness to Practise Policy;
• Student Conduct Procedures.

The priority remains the protection and wellbeing of clients and others.

9. Managing Concerns Identified Through Supervision

Where supervision identifies concerns regarding a student’s practice, these will be considered appropriately.

Concerns may relate to:

10. Tutor and Supervisor Communication

LC&CTA recognises the importance of appropriate communication between tutors, supervisors and placement providers where concerns arise.

Communication will be proportionate and focused on supporting safe practice.
