1. Policy Statement and Commitment

LC&CTA recognises that placement experience is a fundamental component of counsellor training, providing students with the opportunity to develop counselling skills, professional confidence and ethical awareness within real practice settings.

LC&CTA has a responsibility to ensure that placement learning environments support both student development and client safety.

Placement practice is therefore considered within the wider framework of safeguarding, supervision, professional suitability and fitness to practise.

LC&CTA is committed to ensuring that students undertake placement work only when they have demonstrated appropriate readiness and continue to practise within their level of competence.

2. Purpose of this Policy

The purpose of this policy is to outline how LC&CTA:

• Supports safe and effective placement learning;
• Monitors student counselling practice;
• Maintains communication with placement providers;
• Ensures appropriate supervision arrangements;
• Responds to placement concerns;
• Protects clients receiving counselling from trainee practitioners.

3. Principles of Placement Practice

LC&CTA’s approach to placement is based on the following principles:

Client Safety

• The wellbeing and safety of clients receiving counselling from trainees remains the highest priority.

Appropriate Student Readiness

• Students must demonstrate sufficient skills, understanding and professional awareness before undertaking placement work.

Supervised Practice

• Students must have access to appropriate supervision and understand their responsibility to use supervision effectively.

Ethical and Professional Conduct

• Students must work within ethical frameworks, professional boundaries and the limits of their competence.

Partnership Working

• LC&CTA values constructive relationships with placement providers and recognises the importance of communication between training provider, placement and student.

4. Placement Approval and Suitability

LC&CTA seeks to ensure that placement environments provide appropriate opportunities for trainee counsellors to develop safely.

Consideration is given to:

• Suitability of the placement setting;
• Availability of appropriate client work;
• Safeguarding arrangements;
• Supervision requirements;
• Placement expectations;
• Ability to support trainee development.

Eyacement may arise from:

• Placement providers;
• Supervisors;
• Tutors;
• Students;
• Client-related information.

Concerns may include:

• Professional boundary issues;
• Safeguarding concerns;
• Inappropriate counselling practice;
• Failure to follow supervision guidance;
• Inaccurate recording;
• Concerns regarding professional suitability.

Where concerns arise, LC&CTA will review the available information and determine an appropriate response.

Possible actions may include:

• Additional support;
• Increased monitoring;
• Further supervision requirements;
• Review of placement arrangements;
• Temporary restriction of placement activity;
• Fitness-to-practise review where appropriate.

10. Safeguarding and Placement Practice

LC&CTA recognises that trainee counsellors may work with individuals experiencing vulnerability or distress.

Safeguarding considerations are therefore embedded throughout placement processes.

Students are expected to understand:

• Confidentiality boundaries;

11. Communication With Placement Providers
