1. Policy Statement and Commitment

LC&CTA recognises that successful completion of counsellor training requires more than academic achievement.

Students undertaking counselling training must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, ethical awareness, reflective capacity and professional behaviours required to work safely and responsibly with clients.

LC&CTA is committed to supporting students throughout their development whilst maintaining its responsibility to ensure that students progressing through the programme are appropriately prepared for the expectations of professional counselling practice.

2. Purpose of this Policy

The purpose of this policy is to outline how LC&CTA ensures that:

  • Student progression decisions are fair, consistent and evidence-based;
  • Academic achievement is considered alongside professional development;
  • Students receive appropriate support and guidance;
  • Concerns regarding readiness or suitability are identified and addressed;
  • Only students who demonstrate appropriate competence and professional awareness progress towards practice.

3. Principles of Progression

LC&CTA’s progression decisions are based on the principle that counselling competence is developed through the integration of:

  • Theoretical understanding;
  • Counselling skills;
  • Reflective practice;
  • Ethical awareness;
  • Supervision engagement;
  • Placement experience;
  • Professional responsibility.

Progression is therefore considered holistically rather than being determined by academic achievement alone.

4. Areas Considered When Reviewing Progression

When considering student progression, LC&CTA may consider evidence from:

Academic Development

Including:

  • Assignment completion;
  • Understanding of counselling theory;
  • Ability to apply learning;
  • Engagement with feedback.

Skills Development

Including:

  • Counselling skills practice;
  • Ability to establish appropriate therapeutic relationships;
  • Awareness of boundaries;
  • Ability to respond appropriately to client needs.

Reflective Capacity

Including:

  • Ability to consider personal responses;
  • Openness to feedback;
  • Willingness to recognise areas for development;
  • Ability to learn from experience.

Ethical and Professional Practice

Including:

  • Understanding of confidentiality;
  • Professional boundaries;
  • Appropriate use of supervision;
  • Awareness of safeguarding responsibilities.

Placement and Supervision Engagement

Including:

  • Appropriate client work;
  • Accurate documentation;
  • Engagement with supervision;
  • Ability to respond to guidance.

5. Progression Review Process

Student progression is reviewed through consideration by the Directors and Tutor Team.

Reviews may consider:

  • Academic progress;
  • Tutor observations;
  • Assessment outcomes;
  • Placement information;
  • Supervision engagement;
  • Professional development;
  • Any relevant concerns.

Where concerns are identified, these will be discussed and considered fairly, with the student’s circumstances and development needs taken into account.

6. Supporting Students Who Require Further Development

LC&CTA recognises that students develop at different rates and may require additional support during training.

Where appropriate, support may include:

  • Additional guidance;
  • Further skills development;
  • Reflective activities;
  • Additional supervision focus;
  • Agreed development plans;
  • Closer monitoring.

The purpose of support is to enable students to develop the competence and awareness required for progression.

7. Professional Suitability Considerations

LC&CTA recognises that professional suitability is a key consideration within counsellor training.

Concerns regarding professional suitability may include:

  • Difficulty maintaining appropriate boundaries;
  • Inability to reflect on feedback;
  • Concerns regarding ethical judgement;
  • Failure to engage appropriately with supervision;
  • Behaviour inconsistent with professional expectations;
  • Concerns relating to client safety.

Such concerns will be considered through appropriate processes, including the Fitness to Practise Procedure where necessary.

8. Decisions Regarding Delayed Progression

In some circumstances, it may be appropriate to delay a student’s progression to allow further development.

A decision to delay progression is not viewed as punitive. It is intended to provide an opportunity for reflection, learning and development whilst ensuring that students are adequately prepared for the responsibilities of the next stage of training.

Decisions will be based on evidence and communicated clearly to the student.

9. Equality, Diversity and Fair Decision-Making

LC&CTA is committed to ensuring that progression decisions are fair and inclusive.

Individual circumstances, learning needs and reasonable adjustments will be considered where appropriate.

However, adjustments cannot remove the requirement for students to demonstrate essential professional competencies required for safe counselling practice.

10. Student Right to Feedback and Review

Students will be provided with clear feedback regarding progression decisions and, where concerns exist, the reasons for those decisions.

Where a student believes that a process has not been followed appropriately, they may access the relevant review or complaints procedures.

11. Quality Assurance and Continuous Improvement

LC&CTA reviews progression processes as part of its wider quality assurance framework.

Review may include:

  • Tutor reflection;
  • Course review meetings;
  • Student feedback;
  • Assessment outcomes;
  • Placement feedback;
  • Learning from professional concerns.

Where improvements are identified, LC&CTA will update guidance, processes or support mechanisms as appropriate.

12. Commitment to Developing Safe and Ethical Counsellors

LC&CTA is committed to supporting students to successfully complete their training and develop into ethical, competent and reflective practitioners.

The organisation recognises its responsibility to balance student support with its professional duty to ensure that those progressing through training are prepared to work safely with clients and uphold the values of the counselling profession.
